A comprehensive brief was put forward by the clients and the resulting home has met their requirements for a family home that provides spaces for work and play, as they run their business from their home office alongside their young family.

Located in Northlake on a terraced flat section, the design of this home took the importance of orientation into play and was situated to take advantage of the northern aspect of the site.

We had the house energy modelled early in the design process to inform us that the design would achieve the desired result of thermal comfort all year round.

A wall build-up of timber studs and internal timber battens allowed for additional insulation and a layer of an intelligent air barrier, which provides energy efficiency and moisture control, preventing unnecessary moisture entering the building envelope.

Windows are triple glazed thermally broken aluminium joinery using high performance glass allowing maximum solar gain and minimal heat loss. A large and important component in the house construction process, windows and doors contribute to the energy efficiency of the home and user comfort throughout the year.

There is no fireplace in this home, or underfloor heating. The temperature is maintained by use of a centrally located heatpump and a heat recovery ventilation system, a Stiebel Eltron LWZ 180 with up to 94% efficiency.

We worked with the builder from early on in the process to establish a design that was kept in line with the clients budget while keeping all the high performance aspects in the project.

Sustainable thoughtful building practices were used, avoiding common excessive timber usage, preventing unnecessary thermal bridging and ensuring internal comfort and efficient use of precious energy.

The result is a home that uses less energy than an average home, has great access to natural light, and has happy homeowners for years to come. A home successfully designed with energy efficiency combined with comfort.
