Low-Maintenance and Energy-Efficient Design

We’ve designed this house for clients who are relocating from Auckland. We’re guiding them through the design and costing process. Some of their key requests included simple gable forms, 3-4 bedrooms, separation between living areas and bedrooms, acoustic separation, low-maintenance cladding, energy efficiency and usable outdoor living areas.

Located on a breathtaking site in Tasman, the design was driven by the views while also aiming to accommodate passive solar principles and sheltered outdoor areas from the wind.

Energy Efficiency & Sustainability

Passive solar design to maximize heat gain in winter and minimize it in summer.

Increased insulation values.

Increased air tightness to reduce heat loss.

LED lights.

Rainwater collected, filtered and reused on site.

NZ-grown timber is used for the structure, and parts of the cladding and decking.

Design

The modern simplicity of the twin gable form provides a sheltered courtyard in-between, while also distinguishing between public and private areas.

The living area features a raking ceiling which is contrasted with a cosy lounge retreat with a fireplace to the rear.

The desire for a low-maintenance house, alongside our clients’ monochromatic taste, directed the material selections.

Cost-Effectiveness

The house form and roof lines are kept simple to reduce construction complexity.

Low cost, readily available local materials are specified.

Well-considered design is used to create functional spaces, rather than just increased size.

Please feel free to contact us if you’re considering a new build, we’re happy to talk through the process and have an obligation free chat on site.
