Understanding the Building Design Process

After more than sixteen years in the architectural industry, Phil Checketts has some fairly strong views on individuality. Just a hint of exasperation creeps into the architectural designer’s voice when he talks of suburbs with identical homes – where the only noticeable difference is the colour of the letterbox. “Everybody is different; we are all created differently with differing personalities, so why would you want exactly the same house as Mr. and Mrs. Smith at number 25?”

For some, off-the-rack plans and prefabricated homes, take away the onerous task of having to start from scratch. Individual design may cost a little extra in initial outlay but more than pays for itself over time, both in increased enjoyment of the end product and increased capital value of the property.

DesignBASE has produced a booklet, Understanding the Building Design Process’ to help those who are thinking about building, whether it be alterations, additions or a new home. The aim of the booklet is to give people a place to start and to consider factors they may not have thought were relevant.

The booklet offers a step by step guide on gathering information, technical terms and design thought processes. “A common mistake for the untrained eye to make is adding angles or design features previously seen on existing dwellings. These may make a statement where first observed, but to incorporate them into another design may end up with disastrous results”, Phil notes. “Our designers like to work with their clients assessing their needs, individuality and preferences. We have the resources to quickly go through consent processes, land information, council requirements and many other legal obstacles that may come up. Our systems ensure a smooth transition from the planning stage to the final result. We find our clients enjoy the experience and the excitement of building their own home with as little stress as possible”.

Copies of Understanding the Building Design Process’ are available from DesignBASE offices in Nelson, Te Anau and Invercargill or phone 0800 1000 40.
